In light of the recently concluded World Heritage Committee in Azerbaijan—where Jaipur was nominated as a World Heritage City—this walk aims to build an understanding of how an area or monument is designated a World Heritage Site.
The Qutub Minar and its monuments were included in the World Heritage List in 1993. The monuments fall under criteria (iv) of the World Heritage Convention where a site or an ensemble ‘illustrates significant stages in human history’. The different components of the complex—the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, the Qutub Minar, the iron pillar of Delhi, the tomb of Iltutmish, the Alai Darwaza and more—present a unique example that illustrates the history of Delhi, the advent of Islam in India and the architectural evolution that took place across centuries within the complex.
The walk will incorporate information related to the history of the Qutub Minar complex, concepts related to World Heritage Sites and information on heritage conservation.
This guided tour is free.
