The Shri Pratap Singh Museum is one of Kashmir’s oldest museums. Located in Lal Mandi, Srinagar, the museum was established in 1898 CE in the maharaja’s summer guest house, based on items transferred from the state toshkhana or treasury. Approximately 79,595 artefacts and objects covering various subjects like archaeology, numismatics, decorative art, arms and armoury, paintings, textiles, etc. are housed in the museum.
The museum has a rich collection of antiquities ranging from prehistoric times to the modern period. The objects housed in the museum include coins, terracotta figurines and tiles, pottery, stone sculptures, bronze objects, weaponry, paintings, manuscripts, textiles and jewellery. These objects are displayed in chronological order, giving visitors a comprehensive experience of the history and culture of Kashmir.
