The Lyngiong Sacred Grove is a preserved forest which is located about 33 Km southwest of the capital city, Shillong. It is one of the biggest sacred groves which is home to species of orchids, several rare species of medicinal trees, plants and animals.
The sacred grove is the abode of U Basa (the guardian spirits), also known as the Basa Ryngkew. The locals believe that Basa looks after the village as well as the villagers and keeps them safe. Once a year, a lyndoh (priest) carries out rituals in the grove as worship to Basa.
Sacred groves are protected areas that have cultural or spiritual significance. They are tracts of virgin forests with rich biodiversity, which have been protected by the local people for centuries for their cultural and religious beliefs. Every sacred grove carries its own legends, lore and myths which are integral to it. The religious beliefs attached to groves play a significant role in promoting and conserving the flora and fauna of the region.
