Do you want to start your morning with a dose of sound, sight and smell than a cup of piping hot filter kaapi? Then, Krishnarajendra market, one of the largest flower and vegetable markets in Asia, is the place to be! The market, named after Krishnarajendra Wodeyar (the twenty-fourth Maharaja of Mysore State) was opened to the public in 1921. It was built on the model of the Sir Stuart Hogg Market in Kolkata. From the Siddikatte Lake to a battlefield and, later, a bustling bazaar, this place has seen it all. Not only is the produce procured from neighbouring villages a sensory delight but one can buy fresh vegetables and flowers here at unbelievable prices!
Another heritage site worth mention is the Dargah of Hazrath Mir Bahadur Shah, dedicated to the brave kotwal (resident police officer) of the fort who resisted two thousand British soldiers and died for his State in the third Anglo-Mysore War. The dargah stands in the middle of the market. Without the original structure being tampered with, this wholesale market soon will have a different look under the Smart City Project. Join us for an illuminating morning walk to uncover varied layers of history hidden behind this marketplace.
