If you ask any Indorie to define Indore, they’ll simply tell you ‘food and heritage’. However, if you ask them which heritage sites to visit, very few will have the Krishnapura Chhatris of Indore on their list. Most of them know this monument as a structure that is beautifully illuminated at night, but hardly know the reason behind it or the purpose of the place.
The chhatris were built in the late 1800s in the memory of the Holkar rulers. They were constructed on the spot where the Holkars were cremated, near Rajwada, which today stands elegantly on the banks of the Khan River. If you are a photography enthusiast, then this place will be a treat for you.
The Maratha rulers were highly skilled architects, as we can conclude from our recent walk in ‘Lalbaug Palace and Rajwada’. As a result, this walk was conceived of, and is dedicated to one of the most iconic heritage sites in Indore.
So let us spend our Sunday learning about the ancient glory of Indore and exploring a monument that portrays the bravery and courage of its rulers.
