The roza at Sarkhej is one of the most revered sites in Gujarat. Sarkhej was once a prominent centre of Sufi culture, and home to Sufi Saint Shaikh Ahmed Ganj Baksh. It was based on his suggestion that King Ahmed Shah decided to establish the city of Ahmedabad on the banks of river Sabarmati, a few miles away from the city of Sarkhej.
Like many monuments built during that period, the complexes at Sarkhej exhibits a fusion of Islamic, Hindu and Jain features to form a composite 'Indo-Saracenic' architectural style, and has been famously dubbed 'Ahmedabad’s Acropolis' by architect Le Corbusier.
Let’s take a walk across the corridors of Sarkhej and relive the period in which the idea of Ahmedabad as a city was born.
