Of Queens and the Mughal Harem—Revisiting Red Fort

About the walk

This event is ticketed.

Delhi is scattered with historical gems and one will uncover layers of legends and stories as one explores them. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan planned a new capital on the banks of the river Yamuna and built the Red Fort in the seventeenth century as his capital city and citadel. Originally called Qila Mubarak, it is constructed in red sandstone, hence the colloquial name ‘Red Fort’ or ‘Lal Quila’.

In Mughal history, we hear stories of powerful women punctuating the mostly male narratives, adding intrigue to stories of blood and gore. We will discuss these women and the royal zenana (the living space of princesses, concubines, slave girls and wives).

During the walk, we will cover famous sites such as the Diwan-e-Khas, Diwan-e-Aam, Khas Mahal and Moti Masjid inside the fort complex. Come and join us to watch the Mughal harem unravel before your eyes.
