‘Chowk’ in Hindi means ‘an open market at a junction of two roads’. However, in Lucknow, Chowk refers to one of the oldest markets and residential localities of the city. Chowk is a part of the old city of Lucknow. This is the place where one can truly explore the cultural and historical heritage of Lucknow. The market has many small shops where Lakhnawi specialities like chikan-work clothes, itra, ornaments, dress materials and craft items can be bought. Chowk also boasts of splendid architectural works from the Nawabi period as well as modern houses. There are several food stalls in the Chowk market area. Popular food items include Tunday Kababi’s kabab paratha and a variety of milk products like kesaria doodh, thandai, makahan malai and rabri. Some of these stalls were established over 200 years ago. Ram Asre, Raja Ki Thandai and Radhey Lal Sweets, to name a few, are some of the popular shops in Chowk.
