Live Broom Making Demonstration

Join us for a broom-making workshop that will take us on a journey through the Rajasthan via the fascinating variety of brooms used across its landscape. 

The humble broom - an inconspicuous object of fundamental importance in our lives - is rooted in the local ecology and traditional knowledge systems of the region. We will join Jeetu Koli, a member of the widely dispersed Koli community which has made brooms for many generations now, and Kuldeep Kothari ji, the Secretary of Rupayan Sansthan which setup and runs the Arna Jharna Museum situated in Jodhpur. 

Through the workshop, they will shed light not only on the process of broom making - the natural materials available based on different staple food zones of Rajasthan, procurement of raw material for broom making, process of making brooms, its use on different surfaces - but also on the world of rituals and beliefs associated with these objects of daily life.  

Arna Jharna: The Thar Desert Museum was envisioned by Padma Bhusan Komal Kothari, based on indigenous knowledge of people living in rural Rajasthan, and has curated an exhibition of over 100 brooms from across Rajasthan.
