Commitment to Kashmir (CtoK), a Charitable Trust, registered in 2011 under the Trust Act of India, was launched the same year by the late L.C. Jain - activist, economist, Gandhian, and a lover of craftspeople.
CtoK provides innovative and holistic hands-on support to a new young generation of Kashmiri craftspeople; helping them infuse traditional craft practices with new energy through capacity building workshops, design development mentoring, and opening marketing avenues.
The objective of CtoK is Poverty alleviation and craft revival by aiding the creation and development of small businesses, owned and operated by artisans engaged in the production of traditional Kashmiri crafts and redefine the handicrafts sector by empowering craft leaders with the required skills and resources to meet changing market needs.

A graduate of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, Burhan is an independent product designer who picked up the traditional craft, and is using technology to reinvent it and create functional objects such as Bluetooth speakers, lampshades and clocks. In the process of finding new relevance for a traditional craft, Khateeb’s intent is to augment the income of the artisans he works with.

Kashmir papier-mâché has a history of over 700 years. It has been used to craft paper pulp objects into richly decorated artefacts. Sakhtasazi is the art of making the base structure for which the Sakhta artisans painstakingly convert raw paper pulp into objects of high aesthetic significance. This art form, however, is at risk of being lost in our times. To revive this languishing craft Commitment to Kashmir, has attempted to revolutionise design and market dynamics for the Sakhta craft. Contemporary shapes have been crafted using new moulds and traditional skills. Different ways of surface finishing have been explored with the aim of retaining the texture of the paper in the final product. Chemical free fabric dyes have been used to colour the paper which is then polished with a couple of layers of wax making the product durable. Along with these changes in production, there is a much needed change in perception of the Saktha artisan who has been a hidden force in carrying this rich tradition forward. CtoK endeavours to bring a new life to Sakhtasazi by bringing these artisans to the foreground.
CtoK’s workshop on Sakhtasazi on 15th Feb’2020 aims to provide a platform to discuss Sakhtasazi and showcase the work done by the artisans. In this workshop participants can learn more about this traditional art form, interact with the designer and watch a Sakhtasaz bring raw paper pulp to life. CtoK welcomes you to participate in a talk and live demonstration of Sakhtasazi by traditional artisan from Kashmir.
