Block printing begins with carving designs into wooden blocks by hand. These blocks are then dipped in dye and printed onto fabric. At Karomi, our hand block printing is the love child of an age-old craft and modern aesthetic. Our printing is characterised by the unique method of ‘print over print’ or ‘layering’, which results in a very fine textural and artistic effect.
The walk will begin with an introductory talk on print at the Karomi design studio, followed by a hands-on experience of printing on handwoven silk at the printing unit and a session around the handwoven jamdani fabric which is Karomi’s specialty. Energised by a tea/coffee session, the walk will end with each participant being gifted the handkerchiefs they printed as a memento of their time spent with Karomi.
