Gwalior has had a rich culture of music throughout its history. There's a local saying that even the crying of newly born children in the city is musical. It has been the home of some of the greatest musicians of the country, such as Raja Mansingh Tomar, Mian Tansen, Ustad Nathan Pir Baksh, Pandit Shankar Rao Pandit, Ustad Nissan Hussain Khan, and many more.
Sarod Ghar is a museum dedicated to the well-known sarod players of Gwalior, its famous families of musicians, and the classical music that they produced. Its collection features some of the greatest sarod players of the nation such as Nanne Khan, Asghar Ali Khan and Hafiz Ali Khan, followed by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan today. The museum also holds the colourful history tracing the four generations of sarod players born here. It has well-preserved documents, musical instruments, photographs of the family, and an open-air auditorium for the daily musical performances. The museum is now run by the Hafiz Ali Khan Trust for the Conservation of Classical Music.
The guided tour is free.
