Changpa community of Kharnag area in Changthang region of eastern Ladakh are among the finest producers of Lena or Pashmina wool. However, in recent times most of the families of this community migrated to Kharnagling area of Choglamsa in Leh, adandoning their traditional nomadic way of life and occupation of rearing sheep and goats in vast mountain pastures. Each of these families have faced great ordeal in continuing as nomads moving from one pasture to another, as they did for centuries, and they have their own stories to narrate about their woes that led to their migration.
Women members of the community, however, have been outstanding in successfully emerging from such a crises situation. They got together as self- help groups and continued weaving, creating niche for their range of products. This walk gives you that surreal experience of nomadic life expressed through their weaving skills.
