Despite having lived more than two centuries ago, Tipu Sultan appears to inspire impassioned debate to this day—not just among historians, but also among politicians and public figures and even among members of the public. Was he a bigot? Was he a freedom fighter? Should his birth anniversary be commemorated? Should he be expunged from school textbooks? These are some of the questions that have been asked about him in the last few years alone. These are some of the questions we will try to address as we walk through two monuments of great national importance, known as Bangalore Fort and Tipu Sultan’s Palace.
We will begin the walk at the fort that the English East India Company successfully laid siege to in 1791 during the third Anglo-Mysore War, a siege that precipitated the fall of Bangalore and presaged 150 years of (indirect) British rule over the city.
We will then walk over to the palace, about half a kilometre away, which was built by Haider Ali and completed by Tipu Sultan. At the palace, we will also see a small exhibit dedicated to the life of the great ‘Tiger of Mysuru’ .
