Founded in 1814, the Indian Museum is the earliest and the largest multipurpose museum, not only in the Indian subcontinent but also in the Asia-Pacific region. Out of all the sections in the museum, the most popular section is that of archaeology. This section displays sculptures from the Maurya and Sunga periods, architectural remains from Bharhut and Bodh Gaya, sculptures from the Gandhara school of art, and the Kushana, Gupta, Pala-Sena, Chandella, Hoyasala, Chola and Pallava periods, including displays of some South-East Asian sculptures.
