The former Dalhousie Square, now known as Benoy-Badal-Dinesh Bagh, is a retreat at the centre of present-day Kolkata. Spread across an area of two square kilometres, the square is surrounded by some famous Victorian-style buildings and offices, banks and marketplaces. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Calcutta was the capital of British India, and Dalhousie Square was the city’s financial, social and political hub. After the capital was moved to New Delhi in 1911, the buildings circling Dalhousie Square were overlooked over time and occasionally obliterated.
