According to a local shoemaker in Agra, almost every fifth pair of shoes in the world is made in the city. Be it canvas sneakers or leather sandals, sports shoes or cotton mochasins, Agra has been a centre of the shoe manufacturing trade from the beginning of seventeenth century. It is interesting to note how different communities are working together in these unorganised handicraft clusters to produce and supply footwear for some of the finest brands around the globe.
Join us on a handicraft tour across the Hing ki Mandi area as we tell you the story of how shoe manufacturing started in the city, and discuss how this trade has contributed towards transforming the lives of the people involved in it and the culture of city.
This guided tour is free.
