This winter, let’s explore and revisit the history of textiles and cotton handlooms in India, particularly in Hyderabad and its surroundings. As part of this exploration, we will visit ‘Malkha,’ one of the finest institutions which revolutionised cotton, restoring local economies. Malkha is a combination of two words – malmal and khadi. Malkha’s mission is to present an evolved alternative to the industrial model of making cotton. Using elementary technology and eliminating unnecessary steps from plant to cloth by preserving the intrinsic properties of cotton, Malkha makes handloom cotton, and restores the livelihood and dignity of each producer.
The walk will take you through the process of making cotton from plants. There will be short demonstrations on spinning, weaving, dyeing and printing of cotton fabrics at Malkha.
This guided tour is free.
