Lucknow, a city known for nawabs and kebabs, is abound with cultural heritage. One highlight of this city’s heritage is the Bara Imambara. A major landmark and a symbol of the pride and grandeur of Lucknow, the beautiful structure encompasses mysteries and histories worth delving into. The building was commissioned by Lucknow’s fourth nawab, Asaf-Ud-Daula, during the drought year of 1784 AD to help the poor make a living. It is also a place of congregational prayer and the Muharram majlis (mourning of Muharram). Architecturally, it makes a mark by having an arched ceiling without the support of beams or pillars. The Imambara is also known for its fascinating bhoolbhulaiya (maze) which contains 489 identical doorways. Along with this, the complex also contains the Asfi mosque and a baoli ( stepwell).
