Nartiang is located in the Jaintia Hills, about 62 kilometres from the capital city of Shillong, and is known for a cluster of monoliths. These upright stones, menhirs and dolmens are of various sizes. One of these is said to have been the tallest menhir in the world, measuring about 27 feet long and 18 inches thick. According to a legend, this menhir was erected by Mar Phalangki, who was a lieutenant of the Jaiñtia Kingdom. The upright menhirs are locally known as Moo shynrang—representing the male, and the horizontal slab or the dolmen is known as Moo kynthai—representing a female. This place once served as a market place.
