Pernem is the northernmost town of Goa and acts as the ‘Gateway to Goa’ from Maharashtra. It was under the rule of the Bhonsales of Sawantwadi until it was ceded to the Portuguese. Pernem offers visitors a glimpse of history and a chance to explore the coexistence of various religions. Festivals are celebrated here in a different manner as compared to other parts of Goa.
Our walk begins at the Igreja de Sao Jose, a chapel that was constructed in the year 1852. We will then proceed towards the Bhagwati Temple, an important cultural centre in town. We will pass through the narrow market lane, filled with fresh local produce that makes its way here from nearby villages. Our walk will conclude at another famous landmark, the Viscount of Pernem High School.
