Haryana has had a rich cultural and historical past. It is the land where the famous battle of Mahabharata was fought, the land where Bhagwat Gita was narrated by Lord Krishna to Arjuna. Its name itself means 'abode of god’. The history of the state dates to prehistoric times .
One of the major attractions in Haryana is Kurukshetra, the site of the war of Mahabharata. This area is a unique and remarkable example of the continuity of Indian civilisation and its phases of transition, from ancient to modern.
Through the walk, we will uncover these phases of Indian history by starting with Harsh Ka Tila, an archaeological site which has an ancient mound standing 15–18 m tall; it is said that it belonged to the Kushanas. It is surrounded by Mughal garden of Charbagh (quadrilateral garden) pattern. At 100 m away from Harsh ka Tila is a baoli made of Lakhauri bricks; baolis were a major source of water collection and management in this area.
The most prominent structure in the complex is the Sheikh Chili tomb, which is also known as the 'Taj of the North'. This marvelous structure is an impression of the religious and spiritual teachings of the famous saint. As we move around the complex, we see various other historical structures which stand as reflections of our ancestors and of India's glorious past.
