Dholpur is an ancient city and a popular tourist attraction in Rajasthan. Although Dholpur is mainly known for its Chambal safari, Machkund, a site of pilgrimage, also attracts visitors from across the country and adds a sacred value to the city.
Machkund is situated almost four km away from Dholpur. Its name originates from that of the 24th ruler of the Suryavanshi dynasty, Raja Machkund. It is surrounded by many small temples that were built between 775–915 BC, all of which were constructed by different kings who ruled the area. The temples were built using Dholpur’s famous red sandstone.
