Located near the mouth of the Panvel Creek, the Belapur Fort is one of those surviving pieces of Siddi architecture in Mumbai. It is a symbol of the history and transformation of Navi Mumbai since 1550. The strategically located fort precinct is an excellent example of sea-fort architecture that developed under both the Siddis and the Portuguese. It is also a good place to explore the exotic natural heritage of the area, which is interwoven with 19th century cultural heritage.
This walk explores the architectural and political history of the fort, along with a detailed narration of cultural associations that communities have developed for its protection. We shall also learn more about the 'beli' (sacred leaves), from which the Belapur Fort derives its name.
