The absence of an adequate ongoing dialogue between the past and the present has an overwhelming impact on the way the inhabitants of Bengaluru and hence others imagine the city. The few remnants of historical monuments are all interpreted in ways that reflect current concerns. The Inner Circle, Whitefield, is one such remnant of the forgotten history of Bangalore. One of South India's prominent Anglo-Indian settlements in the past, the future of the settlement appears grim today. The original circular settlement with its surrounding agricultural fields has been swallowed up by commercial and multifamily residential developments, till it became a suburb of Bangalore.
This walk is an analysis of the transition between the colonial and postcolonial periods, using the bungalow as a phenomenon. It attempts to provide an excellent opportunity to investigate a number of questions regarding the built environment and its relation to society. We will also have the opportunity to explore the unique and forgotten Anglo-Indian culture and heritage.
