Celebrating Republic Day - Role of Kalamkhush in Swadashi Movement

About the walk

'Kalamkhush' is a handmade paper by Gujarat's Khadi Gramudyog Mandal, which was founded in 1940 by Shri Vallabhbhai Patel in Ahmedabad. All of Gandhiji's philosophy and activities are carried out here so that people can avail 'Swadeshi' items like handmade paper, Gandhiji’s famous charkha, and other items which were part of his 'Swadashi aapnavo' campaign. Previously, this unit was located in Gandhi Ashram and it was known as 'Dilkhush'. Handmade paper from ‘Kalamkhush’ is totally eco-friendly as well as wood free and made from waste cotton rags. Along with these merits, the paper's longevity is almost two hundred years and owing to this it is mainly used in handwritten manuscripts for preserving and documenting our culture, craft, science, astrology. Stationary, invitation cards, greeting cards and many such items are also made from this paper.

During this walk, we will explore, witness and understand the process of making handmade paper and hand-charkhas for spinning yarn, and visit the paper products outlet in the unit.

This guided tour is free and is a physical tour.
