The arid regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan have several stunning stepwells, which were built to store rainwater for an extended period of time. Of all these stepwells, the one at Adalaj is of unique importance. It has spectacular carvings, as well as a deeply interesting tale behind its creation.
Built in 1499, the vav (stepwell) incorporates design elements from Hindu as well as Islamic architecture, and is the only vav with three different entrances that leads to the main well. Its beauty is still intact, and the details of the carvings have endured through time.
This is a custom walk for the students of MS Ramaiah School of Architecture, Bangalore. This walk is not open to others.
