Celebrating World Heritage Day – Exploring the Ruins of Itanagar’s Itafort

About the walk

Itafort, from which the name Itanagar--the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh--has been derived, is a big medieval fort complex. Discovered in the early-20th century, the monument lies in ruins today. This heritage walk, conducted for the students of Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar, seeks to explore the archaeological landscape of Itafort, its history, the enigmatic ruins (especially the Southern Gate), architecture, local folklore associated with it, and to expose the students to the controversy surrounding its date and builder.

 

This is a custom walk for the students of Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar. This walk is not open to others.

Mr. Duli Ete is an Assistant Professor of History at Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. He graduated from Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, University of Delhi and received his M.A., and MPhil. degrees from the Department of History, University of Delhi, specializing in ancient Indian history.
