Mumbai, a city that has traces of its colonial past hidden in every corner! Although Mumbai blossomed under British rule, did you know that it played a crucial role in India’s freedom struggle?
Hidden in the lanes of Mumbai are places that have witnessed moments that formed an integral part of our freedom struggle. From the city’s role in the Revolt of 1857 and the first session of the Indian National Congress, to the first-ever Ganpati Utsav and the spot where Mahatma Gandhi famously declared 'Do or Die', Mumbai was always an important centre of the Indian struggle for independence. Interestingly, Mumbai was also the city that saw the last of the British troops, who sailed out of the city’s harbour on February 28, 1948!
With Independence Day right around the corner, this is a perfect time to visit these iconic spots. Time and apathy may have chipped away at these relics of the past, but a walk down memory lane will bring these places and their stories to life again.
Together let’s explore the places in Mumbai that played a role in gaining the freedom we hold so dear!
