Exploring the Galleries of the Indian Museum

About the walk

The Indian Museum is the oldest museum in India, and was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1814. With numerous galleries and displays on art, archaeology, geology, zoology and anthropology, the museum is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Culture, a part of the Government of India. From the story of its foundation to the long list of eminent personalities associated with it, the Indian Museum has a long  and interesting history.  It houses numerous collections of artefacts and antiques that showcase our marvellous culture and history.

This walk through the museum aims at discussing the role of the museum itself as an institutional part of history. We will also visit a few galleries such as the Terracotta display, the Decorative Arts gallery, and the Gandhara and Archaeology galleries.

This guided tour is free.
