Situated on the banks of the river Wainganga, the Markandadeo temple complex is an important centre of pilgrimage in the Vidarbha region. The temples belong to the Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shakta faiths and date back to the 9–12th centuries AD. We will begin the walk by contextualising the geographical location of the temple complex. We will examine the historical context of Markanda as a tirthakshetra (place of pilgrimage) and discuss local stories and folklore. The walk will focus on understanding the history, art and architecture of the 18 temples and the other archaeological remains present on the premises.
