Known as a nerve centre during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Lucknow is home to some prominent schools and colleges dating back to the colonial era. Colvin Taluqdars' College is one such educational institution that has a history of its own. Having stood the tests of time, the college was one among many institutions that developed during the administration of the East India Company. After the East India Company invaded the state and established its own governance, Sir Aukland Colvin, then Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces, established a school for the children of the British administrators and the landed aristocracy who were known as Taluqdars.
Only when the British left India in 1947 did the college open its doors to the general public and acquired the reputation of being a premier school in the Indian subcontinent. The Governor of the state of Uttar Pradesh is the patron of the college.
The architecture of the school is an amalgamation of Mughal and colonial architectural styles. Classrooms with high ceilings, a neatly built old assembly area, a polo ground with a horse stable, and a squash court, among various other facilities are much more than just a relic of the past for the locals here.
