Chawri Bazaar Walk - The Tale of Courtesans

About the walk

This walk will focus on the history of the tawaifs or courtesans of Chawri Bazaar, Old Delhi. It will cover their history through five periods: their origin (the Mughals); Nadir Shah's invasion; post the invasion; the coming of the British; and post-British rule. It will cover aspects of their sexuality, lifestyle, patronage and relationship with the rulers. The walk will also focus on their fall from grace from elite courtesans to sex workers who are now located in G.B. Road. 

The walk will be covering four spots: the last remaining kotha in Chawri Bazaar, Rukn ud-Ullah's Mosque, Mubarak Begum's Masjid, a mosque built by a courtesan and Ajmeri Gate (G.B. Road entrance).

She is a second year student of History at Miranda House, University of Delhi. While she is interested in exploring the past in myriad ways, she has also been interested in opening up the discipline to non-historians. Her experience with research and conducting walks for Raahi, a society of Miranda House's History Department has been vital in this regard.
