Nongsawlia is located in Sohra, Meghalaya, about 53 km from the capital city of Shillong. The village houses one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in Meghalaya, established in 1846 by the Welsh missionaries. An outstanding personality among the Welsh was Rev. Thomas Jones I, who was also known as the founding father of the Khasi alphabet and literature. The remnants of the first church building lie on the hill of the present Nongsawlia Cemetery. This building was destroyed by the great earthquake of June 1897, and a new church building was built in 1898. The missionaries at Nongsawlia were genuinely interested in conducting educational programmes for the local people. An institution, The Thomas Jones School of Mission, was established in Nongsawlia in 1886 in memory of this pioneering missionary who came to the Khasi Hills in 1841.
