An Unsung Tale of Assam’s Lone Standing Gateway

About the walk

From the arrival of the then Viceroy of India, Lord Northbrook, in the year 1874; to Rabindranath Tagore praising the mightiness of the Brahmaputra and being occupied by the serenity that flows along with it, in 1919;  to Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes being immersed into the river by then Chief Minister of Assam Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloithe 144 years old Northbrook Gate has seen it all. A one-of-its-kind architectural masterpiece, the gate was constructed in the Indo-Gothic style.

Since the times before rail lines were constructed or aeroplanes flew in the North-Eastern skies, times when ships were the only major method of transportation, this gate has borne silent testimony throughout history. Could this be the reason why Guwahati is called the gateway of Assam and the North East? Join us in this walk and participate in the narration of an unsung saga of the Northbrook Gate.

This guided tour is free.
