Tracing Steps of Ochre - The Mahakali Caves Walk

About the walk

The Mahakali Caves are a group of rock-cut Buddhist caves situated in the eastern part of the suburb of Andheri in Mumbai. They are also known as the Kondivate Caves, named after the nearby village of Kondivate. The caves contain a number of simple viharas (monasteries) and a caityaghara (prayer hall). Although these monuments have no relation to the Hindu goddess Mahakali, a small stupa with Mahakali as the deity is worshipped near the caves. According to certain scholars, the Kondivate Caves are a satellite settlement of the Kanheri Caves. The Mahakali Caves are a good example of early Buddhist architecture and indicate the wide spread of Buddhism in the area around modern-day Mumbai around the 1st–2nd centuries CE.

This guided tour is free.
