A Stroll Through Halasuru - The ‘Jackfruit Village’

About the walk

Ulsoor is an urban neighbourhood with a historical legacy - it has gained and lost much in this modern transformation through time. The architecture of any era is always a reflection of personal tastes, but it also carries with it its own peculiarities, the prevalent rituals, prevailing fashions and social systems of the time. This walk attempts to understand the relationship between this architectural, cultural and social landscape, an overlay of the settlement’s history in the modern urban context.

Join us on this early morning stroll across Halasuru or the Jackfruit Village, one of Bangalore’s oldest localities. On this walk, we will explore diverse narratives of a multitude of co-existing cultures and communities, from the times of the Cholas, Kempe Gowda, and finally the British. We will walk through narrow lanes, going past ancient temples, like the majestic Someshwara Temple. Watch lifestyles frozen in a time warp in the surrounding neighbourhood by gazing at the traditional heritage houses of a bygone era, with its local festivals, rice mills, churches, gurudwaras and the famous Begum Mahal, and uncover some hidden tales. Ulsoor’s bustling market will lead us further to the lake with its layered history, where the first British military station was set up. Lastly, we will uncover recent chapters of Ulsoor's history by exploring the British regiment churches, military barracks, heritage bungalows and memorials.

This guided tour is free.
