Stories of Indore and its Independence Struggle

About the walk

As we gear up to celebrate the 72nd Independence Day of India, let us visit one of the most historic places in the city of Indore.

Spend your Sunday exploring Lal Bagh Palace, one of Indore's most beautiful buildings. Built by Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar during 1886–1921, the palace was highly influenced by a westernised outlook and the maharaja’s aesthetic sensibilities. The palace was constructed during the transition period, when power over India was transferred from the East India Company to the British government.

As we walk inside, we will see the gate of the palace, the only one of its kind in Asia. On the gate is the Holkar state emblem with the motto, ‘He who tries will succeed’. The main attraction is the palace’s large rooms, with beautiful carvings on the walls and ceilings.

Come join us as we walk through this majestic palace that was inhabited by the Holkars till 1978. We will also discuss stories relating to the period of India’s Independence, such as when the ‘Iron Man of India’ visited Indore.

This guided tour is free.
