Dr Manikrao Jummadada Vyayam Mandir is an akhada where people practise traditional sports. It was built in the 18th century by Jummadada, a Muslim wrestler who was inspired by Lok Manya Tilak. Jummadada started the Ganpati celebrations in Baroda to instill patriotism and a sense of unity among the people of Baroda State, especially the youth. Initially, the akhada started in a hut, the venue was transformed into its current glory by Rajratna Prof. Manikrao, a disciple of Jummadada.
The akhada houses a small museum of swords. It is also said to be the first place where the flag of independent India was unfurled. This walk aims to uncover all such historical facts about the place, the people behind it and also learn more about traditional wrestling.
