Tripunithura, the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Cochin, is surrounded by stretches of the Vembanad Lake and its canals. The city is also known as the ‘Land of Temples’. The Hill Palace, the official residence of the maharaja of Cochin, is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala.
The erstwhile rulers of Cochin were great patrons of art. Many forms of art and architecture flourished under their reign. The town is also a prominent centre of learning for Carnatic music, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam as well as percussion instruments like the mridangam, chenda and maddalam. This heritage walk will introduce Tripunithura and its royal history. Some of the important sites we will visit are Statue Junction, manimalika or the clock tower, the Poornathrayeesa Temple, Kalikotta Palace, the elephant stables and the iron bridge. The participants will be led through these sites while discussing stories about the royal family of Cochin and its contribution towards multiculturalism, public infrastructure and conservation of traditional art forms.
