The Royals of Gaekwad - Exploring the Maharaja Fatesingh Museum

About the walk

Located in the lush and idyllic surroundings of the Lukshmi Villas Palace Estate, the Maharaja Fatesingh Museum was formerly the Motibaug School, where the young Gaekwad royals received their education. This jewel houses some of the most important artefacts and paintings collected, commissioned and curated by the Gaekwads of Baroda.

Known for their patronage and proclivity for the arts, the Gaekwads created a unique collection that decorated the interiors of their several grand palaces in India and Europe. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III (r. 1875–1939) was the most prominent ruler of Baroda. During his reign, Baroda experienced a renaissance of culture and art. This is also visible in the architecture and milieu of the city, still justifiably known as the cultural capital of Gujarat. Raja Ravi Varma, a prince from Travancore state, was commissioned to paint portraits of the royal family of Baroda.

The museum has a unique and impressive collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain, to which an entire section of the gallery is dedicated. The decorated period room on the first floor is a good representation of the Rococo style.

This guided tour is free.
