Rajwada – Revisiting the Majestic Monument of Indore

About the walk

Through this walk, we will explore the first building in India to be restored incorporating the same materials, styles and methods with which it was originally constructed. Built in 1747 AD, right in the heart of Khajuri Bazaar, Indore, Rajwada was the residence of the founder of the city and has been the venue for various religious state functions.

The construction of the palace is in the Maratha, Mughal and French styles of architecture. It has been ravaged by fire three times in the past, out of which the fire caused by the riots of 1984 was the most destructive. The current Maharani of Indore initiated the restoration of the palace in 2006.

It is believed that the palace was constructed by Muslim artisans from Mandu, who worked for the Marathas. Learn more facts and stories about this majestic and historic monument of Indore, a stellar example of the architecture during the Holkar dynasty.

This guided tour is free.
