The Goa State Museum is a treasure trove of archaeological findings from Goa. The museum, as of 2008, had about 8,000 artefacts on display, including stone sculptures, wooden objects, carvings, bronzes, paintings, manuscripts, rare coins, and anthropological objects. However, on its relocation to Adil Shah’s Palace, many artefacts had to be left in storage due to space constraints. The main attraction of the museum is the statue of Gajalaxmi which is held in high regard throughout Goa. The museum is a storehouse of information on the history of Goa from pre-Portuguese era to Goa’s freedom struggle, and displays various antiquities of religious and cultural significance.
