Ajmer, founded by King Ajaypal in the 12th century, was earlier called 'Ajaymeru'. 'Ajaymeru' was made of two words: 'Ajay', that is, the king's name, and 'meru', meaning 'mountain'. The city was so called as it lay between the mountains, surrounded by them. It has been a pilgrimage centre for different religions from the time of Akbar's rule till now. Ajmer is known for its dargahs but is also dotted with havelis, temples and gates. These havelis and temples were built by merchants in the 18th century. Some havelis have been built with local stone by the artisans who constructed the famous Patwa Haveli of Jaisalmer. This walk will take you through the 18th-century havelis, the famous Jain temples, narrow streets and buzzing bazaars of Ajmer. We will discuss not only the historical and architectural nuances of the city but also its culture, tradition and cuisine.
