A Walk to Nagpur’s Rail Museum

About the walk

The Narrow Gauge Rail Museum in Nagpur is one of its kind and serves as information park for the visitors interested in the history and heritage of railways.

The museum has a combination of open and enclosed areas with various exhibits. It has a collection of various narrow gauge rolling stock steam engines at display, which provide glimpses of the long and eventful journey of railways in India.  The galleries with various artefacts—including photographs, working models of trains, builder plates and logos of different state railways—inform history enthusiasts about the workings of the narrow gauge system. The museum also houses rare collections of stamps of Indian as well as foreign locomotives.

The walk to the Narrow Gauge Rail Museum in Nagpur will involve experiencing these spaces with a backdrop of history of Central Railway and the rail transport system of Nagpur during the British era.

After studying architecture at Nagpur University, Shivani earned a master’s degree in architectural conservation from the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal. Passionate about heritage conservation, she is particularly interested in temple architecture in India. Since 2017 she has been working with the Archaeological Survey of India, Nagpur, as a project architect for the restoration of the main shrine at Markanda. Outside of work, she loves singing, listening to music and traveling.

  • Photography is allowed except at indoor exhibition area
  • The museum has entry fees (20/- adults, 10/- kids) which include a toy train ride which is to be borne by participants
