Bombay was a small trading post until the early nineteenth century and blossomed under the British rule when it served as the capital of the Bombay Presidency. During the late nineteenth century, Bombay became the textile hub of India and the early twentieth century saw the city at the centre of Indian nationalist and political activities. Over time, it rose to become the major trading and financial centre that it is today. Bombay has traces of its colonial past sprinkled about in its lanes! Hidden in the lanes of Bombay are places that have witnessed landmark moments of our freedom struggle. Right from the city’s role in the revolt of 1857 to the first session of Indian National Congress, from hosting the first ever Ganpati Utsav to the spot where Mahatma Gandhi famously declared 'Do or Die', Bombay has been a hotspot throughout Indian history.
