Trailing Through the Historic City of Bhavnagar

About the walk

Discover the historic monuments of Bhavnagar on a serene Sunday morning. Founded in 1724, Bhavnagar was the famous kingdom of a bygone era, and has been a flourishing city ever since. With a plethora of heritage sites to offer, the ‘know your city better walk’ will focus on a diverse range of cultural heritage that the city has to offer. Participants will have the opportunity to discover some of the nooks and corners of Bhavnagar and learn about the intangible heritage of the historic houses that have survived the test of time, climate change and urbanisation.

The walk will begin outside Raj Samadhi, which includes some intricately carved temple structures and memorials of the rulers of Bhavnagar. Following this, we will be passing structures such as Darbari Kothar, once a granary and now used to house archives by the government. The walk will then continue to Ganga Deri, which is a state protected monument and is often referred to as the ‘Taj Mahal of Gujarat’. Monumental structures such as the Bhavnagar Town Hall will lead us to Nilambag Palace, which is now being run as a heritage hotel. Our walk will conclude here and participants will have the opportunity to discuss current issues such as adapting heritage structures into tourist-friendly sites and maintaining them in a way that does not threaten their historical significance.
