Thathera - The Sound of Utensils

About the walk

In 1727, when Maharaja Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer, laid the foundation of his new capital, Jaipur, he emphasised the importance of creating a vibrant, multicultural city. He aimed to attract scholars, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians and entertainers, aware that the aggregate work of this creative class will be the primary driver of economic growth and prosperity in his new capital. A group of craftsmen, called Thatheras, who specialise in making household utensils primarily made from metals like copper and brass, were also invited to settle in the city.

Through this walk, we will discuss the history of this craft, introduce the tools, process of craft-making, tradition and the amazing stories of the community.

This guided tour is free.
