“Aa ka ma bai, pana gua khai...” is a famous Odia uttering practiced during the Boita Bandana Utsava and Bali yatra during Karthika Purnima, which is a celebration of the bygone maritime culture on the banks of the Mahanadi. As far as tangible history is concerned, the State Maritime Museum stands as a testimony to Odisha’s transoceanic voyages and maritime trade with distant Indonesian archipelagos. Set up on the banks of the Mahanadi river over four acres of land, the museum stands on the site of the ancient Maritime Engineering Workshop that was established by the British in 1869. The grand building itself has interesting British industrial history, ranging from in-situ agriculture equipment production exhibits to functioning jetties, and from original saw mills to mighty canons and many more.
