Amaravati, meaning 'abode of immortals', was a thriving Buddhist centre in South India, dating back to the 2nd century BC. It was home to one of the earliest Buddhist stupas with panelled friezes from the Jataka Tales. The Government Museum of Madras holds rich collections from the Amaravati period. It is home to some of the invaluable lime stone sculptures of lotus medallions, drum and dome slabs. This walk will take us through a brief history of Amaravati, its sculptural importance and Buddhist culture.
